Death Rae

Mitch, Nick and I skied one of the Rae Wallace chutes on sunday.  Conditions were prime, if a bit crusty.  I think we hit it a bit early in the day, but after Saturday’s heat wave ski session in thigh deep mush, we opted to take our chances.  It stayed a bit cooler and we found some dust on a rippable crust, with good snow below it.  I think one more hour would have cooked the snow pack to perfection.

The Perch

The skin track up Marmot is hanus.  Snowmachines, bootpacks, lack of snow and ice crust made the climb a goat rope if I’ve ever seen one.  We made it though, and were pleasantly rewarded with untracked, steep goodness.

Check that off the list.  Thanks for the ride Hatch!

South facing aspects are pretty stripped of snow, especially in the high alpine.  Besides the thin snowpack, the sun and warm temps have turns southern aspects into death crusts, and god forbid you have to cross a track on the way down.  Springtime snowpack rules are in full effect, and if you can avoid it, try staying off the heated slopes in the late afternoon (saves the corn for the season).  If not, well then shred, we are all guilty of creating canoe tracks at some point. I’ve been updating pretty lazily this past 2 weeks…if you need constant inspiration, check out the dongshow blog. Those guys have been getting after it.

It’s 16.3 F and snowing lightly up high right now, yet still sort of clear.  Spring light is messing with my brains. We’ll see what comes of this precip, as it has been snowing on and off in the mountains all day but still no registered accumulation at Indy.  Have fun and watch the southern death crust!

Bloodied and Burned

SPRINGTIME! Yes it has officially arrived, but for those us riding Hatcher lately, spring weather has been in full effect.  I skied Hatch Peak from the top on Tuesday and the cold snow was well worth the hike.  Erin, Adam, Mitch and I tagged some lines in the upper Indy Bowl on wednesday, not starting till 3:00 and getting back to the car around 7:30.  It was the bee’s knees.

New snow and blue skies = epic.

Is it the most snow I’ve ever skied at Hatcher? Nope. Best coverage? Definitely not. Snow conditions? Good, but not the best. Hey, maybe it’s not all time, but with over a foot of light fresh, moderate temps, blue skies and good skiing, I will claim Hatcher as epic this past week. The riding conditions have been stellar.

Hatcher Sucks…don’t ski here.

Wednesday we skied blower pow in Porcupine Meadows and Friday we hit Marmot in blue skies and chilly temps.  The whole pass was amazingly empty. Save for a few of the usual lines of Marmot, everything went untouched.

Our friend Dave from Florida killed it! Laying the surf style on Hatcher Pass! Here’s a quick video edit from the past week’s festivities:

In weather news, we got quite the Spring warm up today. This morning, temps had climbed nearly 30 degrees in the previous 24 hours.  We made the drive up to Hatcher and couldn’t pass up the bluebird skies and warm temps.  Erin (AKA Dreaded Skier Chick) and I tagged the main gully on Microdot around 2 pm.  The snow was great, but a little heavier than I like on terrain like Microdot.  Lots of Pinwheels and sun sloughs all the way down.  We then headed over to Lower Eldorado to ski one of the small ribs, and found the skin track up quite interesting.  No shooting or whumping, but definitelty a whole lot of saturation in the snowpack.  I think after the today springtime rules apply.

If it’s sunny, watch those southern and eastern aspects. Sun crusts, facets on the ground and wet saturated snow will keep things interesting. It was 29 at the mine when we left and 35 down in Ptown.

Hmm…can I change my depature date?
